The Center for American Progress gives a good example of why people like casino magnate Sheldon Adelson are willing to throw so much money at Republican candidates. Adelson says he plans to spend $100 million to get Mitt Romney elected. That’s on top of the money he spent on Newt Gingrich, and doesn’t count the […]

According to new research, the world’s super-rich are taking advantage of offshore tax havens to the tune of between $21 to $32 trillion dollars. Yes, trillion. To put that in perspective, that’s more money hidden abroad than in the entire American economy. This is a double whammy to economic growth and recovery. Not only does […]

I know this is a few months old, but it is both hilarious and interesting from a political viewpoint. Even monkeys (as well as dogs and birds) understand basic fairness. So why do Republicans think it is fair when wealthy people pay a smaller percentage of their income in taxes?
Yesterday, Gawker published 950 pages of “internal audits, financial statements, and private investor letters” for companies and other entities in which Mitt Romney has a significant investment interest (mostly through Bain Capital). The whole thing reeks of irony. Indeed, defenders of Romney scream that Gawker itself, while pointing out that Romney avoided taxes by using […]

© Tom Tomorrow I’m really glad Tom Tomorrow did this strip. I was a bit perplexed when PolitiFact gave Harry Reid a “Pants On Fire” lie rating because they said he didn’t have any hard evidence that Mitt Romney didn’t pay any taxes for ten years. Especially since Reid explicitly said he didn’t have any […]

© Mike Luckovich The Obama campaign has created an interesting website — http://romneyplan.org — which allows you to type in your income and see what would happy to your taxes under Obama’s and Romney’s tax plans. Of course, the website makes lots of assumptions, but the basic point is still true. Obama has already cut […]

Under the tax plan promoted by Paul Ryan — Mitt Romney’s Vice Presidential running mate — Romney would pay almost nothing in federal taxes. How do we know this? Because Romney himself told us! In Ryan’s plan, he wants to eliminate income taxes on capital gains, interest, and dividends entirely. That means that the vast […]
So, why is it that Romney is so adamant about not releasing his tax returns? He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who is embarrassed about being rich. So it seems safe to assume that he is deliberately hiding something. One theory concerns the fact that back in 2009, the IRS did a massive […]

© Jim Morin Considering that Mitt Romney’s father said politicians running for president should release 12 years of tax returns, and that Mitt himself, when he was running for the Senate against Edward Kennedy, called for Kennedy to release his tax returns, that there must be some really embarrassing reason why Romney won’t release his. […]

Today we have a Jon Stewart double header! When I started watching this video, I was worried that it was another example of where liberals bemoan it when Democratic politicians won’t play hardball like the Republicans do, but then attack those same Democratic politicians when they do play hardball. But then Jon Stewart pulls it […]
Mitt Romney finally released his tax plan. To nobody’s surprise, it consists largely of cutting taxes by cutting marginal tax rates by 20% across the board. But Romney also promises to reduce the deficit. In order to simultaneously cut taxes and reduce the deficit, Romney is going to have to cut spending. A lot of […]
The vast majority of Republicans have signed a pledge to not raise taxes, and have repeatedly claimed that letting a tax cut expire is the same thing as raising taxes. That’s why they are insisting that Congress extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, even though those cuts were intended to be temporary. However, […]
Jon Stewart on Romney’s excuses for not releasing his tax returns. Brilliant! © Jim Benton
© Jim Morin As I’ve said before, I don’t think it matters whether the consequence of not having health insurance is a tax or a penalty. I’m not sure there is much difference between taxes and penalties. We even have taxes that are specifically designed to be penalties, like taxes on cigarettes and liquor. After […]
Steve Kornacki has a new show on MSNBC called “The Cycle”, and if it keeps doing stories like this, he’s going to be great. Kornacki points out that Obama’s proposed tax increase on the rich is exactly the same thing that Bill Clinton did when he was president. Back then, Republicans claimed that it would […]
