It is pretty bad when you make a statement that is reasonable and accurate, but every single Republican leader attacks you for it, and then they declare your presidential campaign over. Maybe it is karma.

I’m not a big fan of Newt, but I did gain some respect for him when he stood up to the Ryan plan. Unfortunately, I lost much more respect for him when he backpedaled and said he was mistaken about his point of view. Whatever happened to independent thought? Oh, right, that’s socialism.
Remember the Maverick McCain who caved in to the conservative policy? The Republicans who are dropping out are the ones who won’t follow Karl Rove.
If this were the party of Lenin and Stalin, it would be expected. I wonder why they don’t see the analogy? Perhaps they mis-read “Animal Farm.”
Gee, the way the republicans are backing themselves into a corner is a wonderful thing to watch, I haven’t been this confident about a democratic landslide since about this long before the 2010 election…..
I made this very comment to a far-right GOPer I know and his comment is very telling. They believe any compromise or moderate political thought is selling out on their core values. “I don’t believe in compromising to reach a wrong conclusion” was his exact quote. The problem is, EVERY compromise to them reaches the wrong conclusion.
Sammy, I think that isn’t really the problem. The problem is only that they don’t want to compromise. They want it their way or else.
The thing to keep in mind is that were you to have 2 options, your choice or the annihilation of everything you hold dear, you wouldn’t compromise. You would stick to your guns till the bitter end.
Now, if you were someone who refused to compromise but didn’t want to seem like a selfish baby, the ideal thing would be to paint every other choice as that annihilation of everything you hold dear. Then, not only would you be seen as sticking to your guns, but you’d be seen as the paragon of virtue as well, all the time fighting evil and dangerous foes who are trying to corrupt everything around you.

Not that I am defending “them”, but I also blame the media, which is attracted — like the proverbial moth — to crazy statements.
@1032, I think we actually said the same thing. They don’t want to compromise because they believe that their beliefs are steadfastly perfect. And yes, they paint every other choice as the annihilation you mentioned. Even the killing of bin Laden, which until two weeks ago every single conservative in the country thought was a priority, is now suddenly an “annihilation” of some principle that they’ve just pulled out of their collective ass.
@IK, on this particular issue I don’t blame the media. Newt went onto a major news program to make his statement and was almost immediately attacked by his former brethren, which is also newsworthy.
