I would say you’re making a difference.
If others that come to this site for their daily dose of perspective share what’s here and reality comes to those we touch, then one person at a time your efforts are making a difference.
Your efforts keep me sane.
Thanks Dan, but I wasn’t trying to fish. I think it is important for all of us to ask if what we are doing actually makes a difference, if for no other reason to keep the real goal in mind.
Although keeping good people sane might be a good goal as well!
Dan said it perfectly. And people come to us for our perspective. We who check in spread the word.
Another perspective hit me today. As I have said, my great great Uncle Andrew Mellon (a Republican) led us into the great depression allowing banks to deregulate. In 1933, Glass-Steagall Act was passed to control the banks and prevent another Depression. In 1999 under Republican sponsorship,(Gramm-Leach-Bliley act) it was repealed. It took less than ten years for the country to fall apart without the controls on the banks.
Can we ever learn from history?
Fishing or not, I’ll bite like Dan did. I regularly share what I find here (though I’ll confess to sometimes linking to the original article instead of your summary when it makes sense…). Also, since I’m about to move from the conservative midwest to the crazy conservative western Virginia, I’ll need the reassurance that I’m not the only progressive in the world.
You help provide some much needed political stupidness when the Daily Show and Colbert are on vacation. Thats good enough for me.
According to trade lawyer, Lori Wallach, shown at a ISU lecture, broadcast on Iowa Public Television’s Intelligent Talk, the repeal of Glass-Steagal was a requirement of joining the WTO. Many of WTO’s provisions were written by leaders of industry in the U.S. The act had been weakened over the years and politicians from both sides had a hand in it being killed off. I will say from personal experience, that this website has changed my views about the possibilities of internet discourse. That change of heart has opened up new avenues for me that I would never have considered before. Among them are doing what I do (education and advocacy) in new and hopefully effective ways.
