Air traffic controllers. Hmmmm. After the first report out of Reagan, I asked myself, “I wonder what his shift rotation was and how much rest he had between shifts?” Having worked plenty of shift work myself, I know how difficult it is to get proper rest, especially when working different time periods on sequential days. A report I heard on NPR on Monday implied that ATCs may be working with less than 8 hours off between shifts. If most people were to do that for a couple weeks, they’d discover just how hard it is to stay awake during a quiet midnight to 8 shift.
Let’s see….who essentially busted the Air Traffic Controller’s union? Why the original union buster that started us on our downhill slide….
There are several articles out there about why there have been so many incidents of sleeping on the job and what can be done about it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matthew-edlund-md/let-air-traffic-controlle_b_850223.html
