The gay-hating Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is mostly known for picketing the funerals of murdered homosexuals and Jews, but they also protest other places and events. One of the craziest was picketing an appliance store that was selling Swedish vacuum cleaners, because a Swedish pastor had been convicted of anti-gay hate speech. The pastor, whose conviction was later overturned, actually denounced the WBC, who in return denounced the pastor as a traitor and an ingrate.
But WBC’s latest target was the annual Comic-Con in San Diego for “idol worship”. But I’m guessing that the handful of WBC picketers weren’t prepared for the counter-protest from Sci-Fi fans, many of whom were dressed in costume and carrying ironic signs (see photo at right, but lots more lovely ironic photos and a video at the link). Some of the counter-protestors were even chanting “What do we want?”, “Gay Sex!”, “When do we want it?”, “Now!”.
UPDATE: Here’s a larger photo of the counter-protest.

WBC came to my neighborhood when they were touring Massachusetts sometime late last year. They targeted our high school because of we have a gay-straight alliance club. I remember that it was freezing cold but a couple hundred community residents came out and sang peace and love songs for the duration of the protest. It was great. But great.
I meant to say at the end: Cold. Freezing cold. Really, truly, effing cold. But great nonetheless.
If the WBC family died in a single-bus, fiery crash, I wonder who would go to their funeral, and would they carry signs?
Sammy, you sir, are a genius. A Jack Handey/Mitch Hedburg/Steven Wright sort of mad genius.
If Mr. Phelps is going to Heaven, then I would rather not.
Ah, you got to love that first amendment. I was at a funeral for a good friend being laid to rest at Arlington upon his return from Afghanistan. Fortunately, a group called the Patriot Guard surrounded the event providing a human shield against the WBC.
My personal thoughts are I’d like to invoke my second amendment right utilizing a 6.5c round with a clear line of sight. Only a thought, not a plan.
