Just about everyone was caught by Sarah Palin’s surprise announcement that she is resigning as governor of Alaska. So far, nobody has any idea why she is stepping down. She was expected to announce that she would not run for reelection — possibly to free her up for a presidential bid in 2012 — but to resign before she has served out her term as governor?
Andrew Sullivan has a good survey of the reactions, which range from “Bizarre” to “Unless she’s a total moron, there’s no way she’s running for president. Then again, maybe she is a total moron.” And of course, her rabid supporters over at Free Republic are very unhappy.
So far, the only reason that anyone has advanced as to why she is resigning is this (probably doctored) photo:

UPDATE: At the suggestion of a commenter, I reviewed the video and I now do not believe that the photo is doctored. And of course I never thought that she was actually pregnant. But I still think it is ironic, given the role that various pregnancies have played in this story. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone.

I think showing that doctored picture on your website is shameful. I happen to be a liberal but I don’t think liberals should stoop to the low levels that the conservatives do.

Note, the website is in danger of crashing due to the flood of readers and supporters signing up to show their interest in a Palin Candidacy. The GOP establishment had better watch out, Sarah Palin and Ron Paul combined with the power of the internet will remove the stranglehold of GOP special interests and the elites who have brought the party to its knees in defeat in the 2008 elections.
People opinion of this event will be shaped by what comes next. There is another shoes that has to drop. What it is, I don’t know. But until it drops the context of this decision is not clear. Until that shoes drops, I reserve judgment.
I have this feeling that Palin is going to become the conservative version of Ralph Nader. Except that Ralph Nader is actually productive when he’s not running for president.
And I’m with John about the doctored photo. That’s unnecessary and frankly, disgusting.
Before you say the picture is or is not shopped, watch the complete videos of Palin’s announcement. Be prepared to pause the vid and replay sections. Glimpses of the family are pretty short.
Juggle5 – the child is 7 years old. Many children that age have bellies. That is normal.
I think Palin’s about to get charged with embezzlement for that construction deal but who knows. We’ll all just have to wait for the next installment of As the White Trash Turns.
I cannot stand the woman, but stupid picture of her poor 7 year old child is terrible. Please take it off. You are better than that.

She probably resigned because she can’t afford to defend herself from the plethora of ethics complaints against her.
