This clip from Rachel Maddow’s show is a full meal of irony and hypocrisy. The appetizer is Newt Gingrich calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist, followed by him issuing a non-retraction retraction.
The main course is Manuel Miranda, who is leading the effort to get Republicans to filibuster the confirmation of Sotomayor. Ironically, Miranda founded the National Coalition to End Judicial Filibusters. Um, but that was back when the Republicans were in control and the Democrats were threatening to filibuster Bush’s judicial appointments. At that time, the Republicans, including Miranda, were saying that judicial filibusters were unconstitutional. I guess they changed their minds.
But the best part is dessert. In a conference call hosted by The Heritage Foundation on Tuesday, Miranda gives advice to Republicans on how to attack Sotomayor without alienating Latinos with the appearance of being racist:
Hispanic polls, Hispanic surveys indicate that Hispanics think just like everyone else. We’re not like African-Americans. And we think just like everyone else.
Heck, that argument sure convinces me. Not. I guess Obama’s new slogan should be “I think different”.

Just goes to show that any individual of any ethnic background can be racist.
I think I hate all politicians. Period.
Keep in mind Sammy, everyone discussed in Maddow’s piece are not politicians. Even Gingrich is no longer an elected official. They are all armchair gasbags. You might argue that because they are not politicians, they have no restraints on what they say or do. I wonder if Gingrich would be so open with his opinions if he were still in office.
Starluna has a good point: As others have noted, most of the “Sotomayor is a racist” smears are coming from people who are either not politicians at all (people like Limbaugh, Coulter) or are no longer holding office (Gingrich, Miranda).
Starluna, I’m writing a longer article about your first comment (that anyone can be a racist). Look for it later.
It’s SO gratifying to see more and more Republican hypocrites getting in line with the likes of Limbaugh, Gingrich, Mitch McConnell, Romney ad nauseum. Not being able to even imagine being part of the solution their only goal in life to find fault. Every comment, every racial or insensitive remark simply puts another nail into the Republican coffin. The only problem with this is with every new voice heard the coffin must be made larger. The hole was already dug last November. Thank you.
C’mon guys (gals) – lemme have my cynicism.
I actually consider myself a cynical optimist – the true definition of political moderate, no?
What? You don’t like our cynical attacks on you?

[…] it laughable that a member of a minority could be a racist? Of course not. Just yesterday I posted a blatantly racist comment from Manuel Miranda. I believe that saying that a woman, or a Latino, or a member of any other group is necessarily […]
