Trump supporters say they hate immigrants, but they only hate immigrant workers. They seem to be blind to immigrant companies, such as multinational corporations. Even US companies (including those owned by our president) are outsourcing jobs by the truckload, not to mention entire industries. But while the right wants to deport immigrant workers, they are fine with giving immigrant corporations tax breaks. I wonder if any of them have figured out that their beloved Fox News is owned by immigrant Rupert Murdoch.

I think it’s a disguise for racism. Most people will not admit to being racist, but if you look at the groups that they do not like as immigrants, they are always people of color or obviously Muslim. Someone, fair skinned, with a Northern European accent is considered charming and no threat. Corporations, even though they are now people, seldom are seen as ethnic. Of course in past generations this was not true, but it is now. We have learned over the decades to not view the Irish and other groups as bad, but needing to feel superior has left us to find others to fear and denigrate.

Yes, they would be better comparisons, Hassan. Except that former sheriff Joe Arpaio was arresting people who just looked Mexican (or black), and Trump pardoned him because Arpaio “was just doing his job”. And the Muslim ban was not against illegal immigrants, it was against people from Muslim countries, even those with green cards. They hate all immigrants who take their jobs, regardless of legal status.
Iron Knee, I agree, may be majority of them hate immigrants whether legal or illegal. But there are many conservatives who are against illegal immigration for matter of principle. I am immigrant and against illegal immigration as matter of principle.
I am a liberal and I am against illegal immigration as well. But I also realize that there are some things that will cost more than it’s worth to correct, and trying to stem the flow of illegals is very costly. We need warm bodies in this country because we are not producing enough children anymore to make the economy work. If someone, legal or otherwise goes to all the trouble of finding a way into this country, they should, eventually be able to become a citizen. If they break a major law, then they should go to jail and then be returned to the country of origin.
I am in my seventies now and I realized decades ago that my children needed to learn Spanish. To me it was inevitable that the people of the rest of the America’s were going to keep coming and that nothing of substance could be done about it. As long as we are an economic haven for those in dire straits, they will come. Building a wall will not stop them.
WILDWOOD, I am ok with changing immigration policies to be more liberal to make sure there is no need to have illegal immigration. But once the country has made its laws, they need to be followed and enforced.
But that’s just it Hassan, the laws are almost impossible to enforce with any fairness and regularity, and the whole thing is costing us many millions of dollars, perhaps more to find them, round them up, and deport them. I think unless they are caught doing something illegal, let them be. The agricultural industry is hurting for people. The dairy farms are hurting for people. Sending them home, not only costs a lot of money, but it raise prices on goods. If we can’t get the labor to work the farms, then we have to import stuff that is easily produced here if the labor is available. I would like to see the laws changed but that’s unlikely. So I think they should just be ignored as much as possible.
I think our police and courts would be better served if they only dealt with true criminal behavior.
WILDWOOD, you make good arguments, seems like that something to be debated in congress and then voted by representatives of people to decide? What if the majority of American do not feel/think the way you do?
Hassan, it wouldn’t be the first time that the majority of Americans are wrong.
I am of the opinion that those coming from the southern border have more right to be here than those descendants of the English and French coming from the Northern Borders. As I understand it, 12000 years ago, the southern people migrated across the Bering STraits that was land then. Too cold to stay in this country, they went further south. Of course perhaps the Aztecs and such came from the Pacific Islands. People can correct me on this site about my ignorance.
Wildwood: 500 years ago the Spanish Priests landed and foisted Spanish on the Floridians and further south. Spanish is in no way their Native Language. I would love to hear what of their Native languages have survived.
Six of my eight grandchildren had Ancestors on this continent 12,000 years ago. We are the new comers. Four are Seneca, Two Cherokee. We whites who came 400 years ago with guns are the illegal immigrants.

I understand that Hassan, but if we don’t voice an opinion that might be different from the mainstream, then it might never get heard and considered. The American public, to some extent, act as herd animals. If your neighbors are all saying that red is green, then eventually you might begin to see red as green as well. I am something of a contrarian. You tell me to go one direction, I immediately wonder why I can’t go the other. I might go the way you say at this moment just to keep the peace, but at some point I’m going back and exploring what is in the other direction.
I good example of herdism is the so called war on drugs. Never should have happened. Wrong approach. I think many are beginning to realize that, but the damage is done for many. We spend inordinate amounts of money in our judicial system on this. We waste money, we waste lives and we can’t stop now because too much of our economy is based on keeping courts busy, police employed, jails full and lawyers fed. The majority is not always right. In fact they are often wrong. They may get their say,and their way, but it comes with sometimes horrible results.
Ebdoug, they speak Spanish now and whatever has happened to their native languages is in the past. My point was, that I could see the future of this country for several reasons. Remember this was in the early 70’s. One was the catholic church and their lack of sense when it came to birth control, not to mention population control. Most of the Americas speak Spanish and are catholic. Second was their need for a better life and this country had that. I realized then and now that we will become a largely Hispanic nation in the future. It’s actually happened at a slower pace than I anticipated, but I still think they are our future. There are a lot who think that is true and are fearful. Thus you have all the anti immigrant feelings and fear of what is going to happen. The 9/11 bombings forced the fearful to focus on those coming from the middle east a bit more, but they know that between, the Hispanics, the Blacks, and those coming from the Muslim nations, their lily white time is numbered.
The cartoon asks an important question. IS it illegal immigration or immigration in general than Trump voters are concerned about? Are illegal immigrants coming in and climbing their way up the corporate ladder to grab middle class jobs? Or is it legal immigrants who do that? If trump voters are worried about illegal immigration it should be for security reasons rather than economic reasons.
He is only worried about the color of their skin. His mother overstayed her visa; hence an illegal immigrant, but his mother had white skin so no one cared. His mother then was hired by his father to clean his house. The rest is history.
