The Nib has a special series of responses to the Charlie Hebdo massacre from other cartoonists. This includes a particularly powerful piece from a Muslim cartoonist. But all of them are short and well worth a read.

Everyone who kills believes they are justified. The problem seems to be reaching agreement on what justifies killing civilians and what does not, and then applying the rules equally across all cultures.
Perhaps the killing of ANY civilian should be treated simply as murder, no matter who does the killing, and regardless of the perceived religious or political justification. Might that be a good start? And begin by leading by example and all nations, including their militaries and including us and our allies, submitting to the same rules.
Didn’t think so.
Yeah, you just have to look at the variation in the legality of the death penalty to see that this quickly becomes divergent.
But I think you’re being a bit optimistic. Look at the torching of Christian churches in Niger (or Danish properties in 2006). There’s no law / rule / theology that explains that. It’s pure outgroup persecution.
It seems to me that justifications, however tenuous (“I’m offended”), often come after the fact.
