It is actually worse than that. According to NFL tax returns, in the 12 month span that ended March 31, 2013, Goodell earned $44.2 million in compensation.
Their head lawyer earned $7.86 million (with an additional $1.23 million in deferred compensation), and their executive VP came in at $4.24 million (with another $527 thousand deferred).
The NFL may have non-profit status, but their head honchos are sure making a lot of profit off of it. Somebody is making up for the taxes they don’t pay, and that somebody is you.

I love football, but man do I hate the NFL. Between this and their refusal to admit/burying evidence that playing football can leave players with serious brain injuries makes me question my devotion to watching the sport. This is another area where Congress needs to start aiming its rage at corporate welfare rather than assistance to people who are down on their luck. But hey, they took the time to get steroids out of baseball, right? Sort of?
I don’t think it has anything to do with football itself. I just can’t understand why the NFL, which is clearly a money making organization (just ask the people who paid for superbowl tickets!), is exempt from taxes. They have a separate charitable foundation, and I have no problem with that being non-profit. But the NFL itself? Seriously?
Completely agreed. My comment is more that, at least at the professional level, the NFL=football and me watching games and buying a Pats hat supports their shenanigans.
There is no more reason for the NFL to be non-profit than there are for PACs to be non-profits (or getting back to one of your earlier posts, for the internet not being a utility), except of course for their weight in gold and our Congress being beholden to the almighty dollar of fundraising.
