Can someone answer a question for me? Why is the Obama administration so being so strict on federal pot laws? The people who support Obama are more likely to favor loosening of the laws, and the people who are against him aren’t going to support him no matter what he does, so there seems to be no political benefit. So why not give states some leeway?
Funny you should ask that. Contrary to what you hear on the news, Obama is reforming the drug laws, and the number of people incarcerated due to drug use is actually going down now. The new plan is to (to borrow your phrase) “give the states some leeway” to allow them to divert drug users to treatment programs instead of prison, and it is working. Yes, I think marijuana should be completely decriminalized everywhere, but Obama is a moderate. I’m happy that the drug laws are finally moving in the right direction.
