I’ll let Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert have the last words on the debate:

YE OF LITTLE FAITH: You only think 0ßåmå lost that first debate. You don’t understand his long game. But, mark my word, you will understand soon.
At dinner last night, we had just that discussion. What was Obama’s secret plan? Theories included: Obama didn’t want to mention the 47% video or similar things because they knew that Romney was about to apologize for it (note that he did that the next day) and didn’t want to let him do it while everyone was watching. Or, the Republican money had switched away from Romney and was going to fund Congressional races, and now it has switched back. Or, Obama wanted to lower expectations so that when he comes out swinging at the next debate, it will crush Romney. Or, they thought by letting Romney go unchallenged he would put his foot in his mouth.
My main question is, will conservatives put up with the new liberal Romney (who won’t cut taxes on the rich and who supports regulations), just to defeat Obama?
Conservatives know that with Romney in the White House he’ll sign anything they send him from Congress.
A better and less depressing debate happens tonight at 8pm EST. Jon Stewart takes on Bill O’Reilly on http://www.therumble2012.com. Should be fairly entertaining.
IK and A.R.R. – I don’t think Obama could have looked that bad on purpose, and if it was part of a “long game” strategy it was a bad play.
It makes sense to avoid directly attacking Romney. It makes sense not to mention certain key points that you know your opponent is set up to answer. It doesn’t make sense to appear exhausted, stumble over your words, and fail to make your OWN case.
Had Obama done what Bill Clinton did – clearly and assertively make his case, Romney would not have “won”. Had Obama called Romney on the carpet for painting pie-in-the-sky pictures of Romney’s claims, just by being factual, Romney would not have “won.”
I think the truth is this – Obama’s strategy was to try and “do no harm” and “stay above the fray” and he failed, and Romney was brilliant in Etch-a-Sketching his entire platform. And I think in 2 weeks it won’t make more than a 1% difference in the results – because telling America you want to kill Big Bird so that you can spend $2T on MORE defense spending, and presenting mathematically impossible plans for solving our financial crisis, will not work as a positive strategy.
A MUST-READ article: Romney’s Debate Technique http://www.huffingtonpost.com/janet-ritz/romneys-creationist-debat_b_1941995.html
Romney steamrolled FORMULAICALLY. This is an actual LEARNED technique, called “spreading.” It is illegal to use, even in high school debates, where debaters can be removed for using it. Obama responded exactly as in point 4, from the article. This technique is routinely used by virtually all of the extreme right wing, in their over-talking their opponents. You will recognize it. It sucks the oxygen right out of the air.
Excerpt:
“Romney’s version of that technique, known as the Gish Gallop, developed by Duane Gish, the creationist, combined spreading with purposeful lying, resulting in the “flood of B.S. technique” that Romney used to dominate the first debate with President Obama. It’s common among creationists and climate science deniers refuse to debate on the merits by flooding their opponents with false information leaving them without time to keep up with the lies and, as a result, appearing pedantic and professorial in their responses.”
Excerpt:
“An example in the climate science arena, a “Climate Gish Gallop of Epic Proportions,” shows how climate change deniers flood the debate with so many points already proven false that the person listening to or reading their presentation simply can’t keep up with all the rebuttals.
THE LIES WIN.”
>> This need to be EXPOSED. NOW! Where is MAINSTREAM media???
Loray, I think it was pretty clear that Romney was throwing out a lot of BS. But it is still Obama’s job to call him on it.
