Noooo! That is such BS. No more false equivalency! It drives me batty!
I’m with Mike on this one. The last frame of the cartoon is a dumb effort to appear clever. Wit without insight is not worth publishing.
With just a whiff of acumen, the cartoonist could have used the last panel to illustrate that the democratic party IS the political middle if the middle is defined in a historical context.
As you guys know, I hate false equivalencies. But I think it is a mistake to think that any criticism of the Democratic party is a false equivalency.
But I will agree that this cartoon could have been much more witty and interesting. I just couldn’t resist a comic combining politics and bad poetry.
I’m all for criticism, even mocking, both parties with true equivalencies. Gerrymandering is a good example of bad behavior performed by whichever party controls the state legislature, at least here in North Carolina.
I also understand the temptation presented by bad political poetry. Perhaps the last frame should be “when middle finger displayed by parties less”.
I’m currently very sensitive to the issue since a week ago today, when Linda Wertheimer on Weekend Edition Sunday(NPR) was interviewing a woman about Virginia’s vaginal ultrasound bill. She said that is was wrong, and that laws shouldn’t dictate what women had done to their bodies. Linda asked:”Would you say the lawmakers(didn’t say republicans) RADICALIZED you on this?”. Woman said:”I wouldn’t say radicalized.” Very polite. I have to assume Linda just didn’t know what to do about a clear situation where republicans are actually radical. So she decided to do the equivalent of depicting a donkey as a baby. Pretending “it’s both sides” It’s bullshit, that’s what it is.
