Rachel Maddow has an incredible story about how the Michigan legislature is violating the rule of law, and doing everything they can to get rid of democracy in the state, both at the local level and in the legislature itself.

Unbelievably disturbing. I had heard about the emergency manager law and what that did, but I didn’t realize that the GOP in Michigan had stripped democracy from the legislature itself. That’s terrifying, especially if other states follow their lead in that. As Maddow points out, there are a lot of conservative state lawmakers sitting in Congresses across the country right now. It wouldn’t take much for them to adopt some of these laws for their own states.
This is not shocking in the least bit, the government has been moving to strip rights and fuck americans every chance they get for a long ass time now.
Low and behold the ignorant, short-sighted americans in michigan will not stand up to this, the the ignorant, short-sighted americans in the rest of the country feels this doesnt effect them so who cares.
Just moved out of Michigan, but I can say that the emergency manager law is one more layer of developing corruption created in the hopes of curbing established corruption.
I really hope North Carolina is saner, now that I live here.
Based on comments, I don’t think some of you watched the full segment. It’s more than just the emergency manager law that’s a problem. Michigan’s Constitution requires a 2/3 vote for a law to go into immediate effect, otherwise there’s a waiting period. In the House, the split is 63/47, meaning at least 10 Dems have to vote yes for immediate effect. In the past two years, 546 out of 566 laws have gone into immediate effect, despite the fact that Dems have voted as a block against many, many of those laws. The Republican Speaker simply ignores the vote and says immediate effect passes if the GOP says yes. Those laws were illegally and unconstitutionally put into immediate effect. The Speaker is blatantly ignoring the Michigan Constitution and denying elected officials the right to vote.
What more proof do people need that the radical Republican minority is willing to turn our entire nation into a police state? A nation where they deny anyone in the MAJORITY the right to question them?
It is unbelievable, but true, that these things are happening in Michigan and Repubklicans are trying the same thing in many other states. Wisconsin is about to abort it’s Republican power structure, and I hope it is the beginning of a wave to breing down all of these insane extremeists.
After watching the Maddow segment, I’m literally sitting here with my stomached knotted up. It strongly reinforces my belief that there are portions of the right wing of American politics that feel so strongly that they are right that they will kill the principles upon which the nation was founded in order to force their will upon it. Incredibly sad that Michigan is now one of the poster children for this radical takeover of our republic.
I cannot believe, though, that the citizens of Michigan, including the Democratic and Libertarian parties haven’t done something to counteract what is going on. They went to a county court? Why not the state supreme court? Why not federal court?
Fortunately the R-controlled Texas Lege haven’t figured out how to do that…yet…even with a super majority. I guess they’re too busy with invasive sonograms and defunding the 49th-ranked state education system to be so creative as to shortcut Democracy.
