Has anyone checked the temperature in hell recently? Fox News host Bill O’Reilly has written a column that I completely agree with! In fact, it is downright reasonable.
O’Reilly defends JC Penney’s right to hire Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson. She is openly gay, and at least one conservative group is calling for JC Penney to “replace Ellen DeGeneres as their new spokesperson immediately and remain neutral in the culture war”.
O’Reilly defends the right of the conservative group to stop shopping at JC Penney if they don’t like Penney’s new spokesperson, and even the group’s right to express their displeasure.
But what I really liked was when O’Reilly pointed out that, in his opinion, there are far worse role models out there than DeGeneres, and names Kim Kardashian as one of them. If the conservative group wants to protest bad role models, he says they should widen their scope a little.
O’Reilly concludes:
So let’s leave Ellen alone and allow the marketplace to dictate exactly what Americans believe is worthy. That is the American way. Witch-hunting against certain people and groups is not.
Amen.
What makes this ironic is that it puts O’Reilly in the same camp as Howard Stern.

I think it’s funny that this conservative group calls acquiescing to their demands “remaining neutral.”
Someone needs to send Karl Rove some mittens, it must be getting cold down there.
Hell, Ellen should be declared an honorary boring straight white person. (Have you seen her talk show? She used to be funny, now she’s a square!)
Ellen thanked O’Reilly publicly on her show. Er, that’s what my wife said…
Actually she records the show and I get the joy of hearing a lot of screaming ladies every night, who will cheer a change of shoelace colors as if Ellen just cured cancer.
If you click on the word “Amen” in the original post, it is a link to an article about DeGeneres thanking O’Reilly.
It is a shame, back in the day people like OReilly and Glenn Beck were pretty good imo and they went down the crazy train when everyone else did, they took it a little more extreme though. Occassionally you still see glimpses of the old them though
The problem is that O’Reilly does enjoy a good witch hunt from time to time. While I credit him for not joining with these other conservatives in their blatant bigotry, part of me thinks Bill expects the marketplace to oust DeGeneres from her job.
I never know what to make of O’Reilly, not for certain. I’m not sure he knows what to make of himself. My only guess is that he tries to be calculating, making the decisions that will benefit his television status in any which way by standing out, stirring the pot, maintaining viewership, etc. It really depends on how much control he has, I guess – but when he’s a guest on The Daily Show, you can see a sincerity inside him that seems to recognize, without fully admitting it, that he’s just “part of the game.”
There’s something strange happening on the far right. See “Who Castrated Ann Coulter?” in the winger American Spectator (http://spectator.org/archives/2012/02/06/who-castrated-ann-coulter).
Maybe it dawned on O’Reilly and Coulter just how irrelevant they’d become?
Probably has to do with the realization that they need independents to have a chance at winning the election.
Only problem is, they’ve been pounding the ‘evil’ drum for a long time…gays are evil, feminists are evil, atheists are evil, liberals are evil. It’s a bit hard to embrace, or more accurately to get your followers to embrace something you’ve convinced them is evil. Those doors are easy to open, but they are damn hard to close.
O’Reilley is an Independent. The only time I’ve seen him was the first part of the Interview with Obama posted here. I thought he was fair and Unbiased. Since then he has lost weight and become extremely haggard. My guess is that he has bowed to the pressure of Fox to keep his job and doesn’t like himself because of it.
Being a flaming liberal, I always give people (people, not corporations) the benefit of the doubt.
O’Reilly is first and foremost an entertainer, who wants to maximize his ratings. I don’t say this as a negative thing. It is his job, and he is apparently very good at it. I think he is smart (from that perspective) to start distancing himself from the self-destructing far right.
If a skunk lost it’s stripe I still wouldnt raise it as a cat. Once you stink you always stink. My atheism does not provide a prodigal’s son option for Bill.
Scott, I, too, am an Atheist, but still a flaming liberal. Became victim of the Iraq war last fall. My neighbor took over the empty land after his father died. Decided I could no longer mow his land, walk through his land and ski on his land. He was out there shooting for four hours at a time, wanting a fifth tour of Iraq. When Obama ended the war, this veteran decided to stalk and torture me (mentally) until I bought out his right to drive over my land. I paid three times what I should. Purely extortion money from the terrorizing he learned in Iraq. Now the fence he put up on the West of mine is tearing mine down. I don’t blame him. I blame Bush,Cheney,Rumsfeld, Rove. I can see the other side.
