Presidential candidate Rick Perry released a campaign ad that starts “I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.” You can watch it here if you have the stomach.
But what makes it ironic is what Perry is wearing in the ad:
As Taegan Goddard of Political Wire tweeted yesterday Perry is wearing the same jacket in his anti-gay ad as the late Heath Ledger wore in Brokeback Mountain. Is this a subliminal message that Perry identifies with that movie? If so, maybe there is someone out there who can collect this million-dollar reward.

Likes/dislikes ratio for that spot on YouTube 1:122. At least in the YouTube world, Perry’s message doesn’t go over too well.
Now, a clearly ideological question. Is the slope behind Perry leaning to the right or left? Speaking of subliminal. I believe he’s really saying that if we go to the right as a country, we’ll be going downhill. If we go to the left, we’ll be ascending into the future. I’m sure this is what he means being deep thinkers as he and his staff are.
He ran an ad in Iowa claiming that if elected he would cut Congressional Pay in half and send Congress home. Seriously.
I can’t make that shit up.

It’s called “Outsider” and he will cut their pay and send them home if the don’t balance the budget.
I think Perry has a point. Congressional pay should be cut in half. The do nothing half of Congress should lose their pay and go home. The working half can do the governmental heavy lifting without the Republican and Blue Dog dead weight.
Now, Mr Perry, how do we round up them lobbyists and herd them out of town too.
I still remember what it was like when we had Christmas before Obama was elected. Now we’re just not allowed. Well, not exactly, I mean they didn’t put a Federal regulation on the holiday or anything but we just automatically sort of assumed that with a Democrat as President that it was a given that Christmas may as well be outlawed and that open celebration of it might get us indefinitely detained by the military.
We’re having great fun with RP here in Texas. The RP carhart jacket photo is now a meme for all sorts of creativity. These moments of mirth has been brought to you by the citizens of the great state of Texas. Enjoy. Wish I could provide a link but they aren’t too hard to find.

Don and IK – I think you guys are giving Perry too much credit. Supposing that he came up with subliminal messaging within his ads? I saw some of the debates and there was nothing subliminal in anything he tried to say. Box of rocks, thats all.
Subliminal can be unintentional. As they say, a freudian slip.
Is it really the same? There is a chest seam in Perry’s jacket that doesn’t show in the movie scene. The vertical zipper on the left chest isn’t in the movie, either.
Sorry IK…
Box of rocks is right. In an editorial board meeting with the Des Moines Register newspaper, he couldn’t remember the name of Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, and said that there are eight justices in the Supreme Court (that’s an understandable mistake — Clarence Thomas barely counts). So how did he get elected (and reelected) to be the governor of Texas?
Everone’s got this wrong about the jacket. That jacket is being worn in BBMtn because it makes him look straight. These were closeted gents wearing uniforms of conformity to go unnoticed as a means of protection.
I think that the cowboys in BBMtn are dressed like cowboys dress. I don’t know how many of you live in a ranching community, but I do and that Carhartt-like jacket that both RP and the BBMtn gent is wearing is pretty standard dress in these parts. Why, I even have one myself that I was wearing just yesterday. I don’t wear it to give myself a persona. I wear it because it is a tough jacket that keeps me warm. In BBMtn, it was good costuming for a cowboy whether gay or straight. On RP, it’s stage dressing of a different sort.
Carhartt jackets are tough durable and warm so are pretty much standard winter gear for any outside work, ranching or otherwise. They’re manufactured in Mexico, BTW. You’d think clothing so representative of the American work ethic, rugged outdoors, etc., could be actually made in America.
Apologies from Texas regarding RP, however the Democratic party is pretty much dormant in most of Texas. It will be a few years before the Hispanic community realizes if they vote they can change the status quo. If only we could somehow find a suitable replacement for Molly Ivins so we could contribute more humor to the equation, especially with the material RP is providing.
