Meanwhile, Wall Street remains occupied. The protests are growing and have spread to new cities. And even the mainstream media is now talking about the protests.

I checked the link, watched some video, and read some comments. The comment that struck me was the one that called the cops over paid thugs. Really? It was just a few senior cops shown abusing power, cops are not the enemy here, but they do have to follow orders. Sounded like someone who gets there daily dose of Fox News and belongs to that astroturf tea party.
From a comment on the link site and a good line for a bumper sticker or, as suggested by the author, a tee shirt: FIGHT THE PLUTOCRACY, WORK FOR DEMOCRACY
@Dan, some cops are overpaid thugs, but, for the most part, this isn’t true. I read the same comments you did and they trouble me although I will admit that in the 60s I might have said something similar. I still clearly remember the Democratic convention in Chicago. There was absolutely gross misbehavior by the police. I can remember the scenes of Humboldt County Sheriff officers daubing pepper spray with swabs into peoples eyes. I remember the actions of police officers sworn to uphold the Constitution as they fought to prohibit citizens from exercising their Constitutional rights. I remember Rodney King. There are many of these actions that are, in my opinion, off the chart as far as appropriate conduct for cops.
Problem is, although I believe that police in general are far more professional in their comportment than in times past, there are still those that through their behavior give powerful ammunition to folks who want to paint them as tools of the ruling class keeping citizens in their place.
Those in blue are humans out of a general society with an incredible range of individuals – not all of whom have the most compassionate and generous of dispositions. I’m guessing there will always be bad cops just like there are bad accountants and bad actors (for some reason a picture of Charlie Sheen pops into my head as I type this).
I wonder if those making these sort of comments recognize in themselves the characteristics they ascribe to the cops? I’m guessing some wouldn’t have to look too deeply to find them.
Don, thank you for your thoughtful (and accurate) list of historical incidents.
IK, thank YOU for publicity about the NY “occupation.” It continues to grow, as the Madison resistance did, and I hope it signals an awakening of what citizens sometimes have to do to keep their democracy.
Don, you’re spot on as usual. Excellent commentary.
