A whole bunch of people I know are probably going straight to hell for laughing at this story, but it is just too ironic.
Jamie Gilt is a gun activist on social media. Her Facebook page is full of pro-gun messages. Earlier this week Gilt had an online discussion where she claimed that having a gun was the best defense against burglars because criminals might change their plans if they knew they were going to get killed. She even bragged about how her children all like guns, saying “All of ours know how to shoot too. Even my 4-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot the .22.”
The very next day, she found out just how much her 4-year-old likes to shoot. While she was driving and her young son was in the back seat, he somehow managed to get his hands on a loose .45 caliber handgun and shoot her, with the bullet going through the seat and through her torso. Luckily, she is expected to survive.
It is against the law to leave a gun unsecured so that children can get access to it.

I can’t remember who it was here that pointed it out, but aren’t toddlers shooting more Americans per year now than terrorists?
We need a wall around the daycares to keep this country safe.
The only way to counter a bad toddler with a gun….
Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
… is to arm all toddlers?

Ok, full disclosure, I saw this one somewhere recently but can’t remember where: some grade school students are outside playing during recess when a bully throws a rock and hits one of the kids in the head. The teacher, hearing all the commotion, rushes outside and upon seeing what happened proceeds to give every kid their own rock. Because the only thing that stops a bad kid with a rock is a good kid with a rock.
But really, a 4-year old with a .22 takes the cake! They’re even making them in bright pink colors for girls now. I feel sorry for kids growing up in a family (when they have one) that values an unbridled 2nd Amendment over their own well-being. The recent incident of a mother getting shot and killed by her own toddler at a Walmart, who found a loaded gun in her purse, is not only a tragedy for the (Darwin Award winning) mother, if not her just comeuppance, but even moreso for the toddler who will have to live with the consequences of her irresponsible actions for the rest of his/her life.
There are now more guns than people in the US. You can purchase thousands of rounds of ammo online without restrictions (unlike Sudafed, where you have to present ID at the pharmacy lest you might be running a meth lab). Guns can now be printed out using a Makerbot and are getting better at it all the time, so background checks and registration, as loose as they are, are looking ever more irrelevant. And the gun lobby still cries about the assault on our beloved 2nd Amendment.
And this just in: the NRA’s latest mission is to loosen the rules on silencers that have been on the books since the 1930s, arguing for their value as hearing-protection devices. We have truly lost our way and collective minds here.

Idiots come in all shapes, sizes, colors and political affiliations. After she recovers, she should be charged for having an unsecured firearm. If she was in the military, she’d be charged and likely court martialed.
PatriotSGT: I wish all gun owners in this country had such strict training environments on firearms safety!
Shall we also add reckless endangerment of a child to those charges? This story could well have erred into abject tragedy rather than dark irony.
It is unlikely she will be charged with anything. In cases like this, if it is the parent who is shot, then charges are rarely filed (prosecutors would say she has already suffered enough for the crime, which is only a misdemeanor). If someone else had been shot, then she probably would be charged and punished.
As much as she would make a good example, just because something goes viral doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to treat her differently than normal.
Plaxico Burress (former NFL player) got 3 years in prison for shooting…himself. Of course that was in New York, which has relatively tough gun laws.
“with the bullet going through the seat ”
I am appalled by all this mockery of a patriotic, Second Amendment-affirming American mom. Clearly the fault lies with the manufacturer of her pickup truck. Mom had no way of knowing that her seat wasn’t bullet proof. Probably the vehicle was assembled by some illegal immigrants from Mexico. Once Trump gets elected, he’ll put a stop to this sort of shoddy workmanship once and for all!
CARTER SHMECKLE: Can you send us more posts? That is so funny. Unless you already have a site under another name.
I’ve dealt with many people in my life through clinics, hospitals etc. You can measure a person’s IQ through their absorption or lack of absorption of sarcasm/irony.. I asked a clerk once how you “unthaw” something. (a local very funny colloquialism she innocently used.’synonymous to thaw, used by the ignorant'” s) She blew big time.
I can see 20 years down the line when the whole family is gathered so sonny can introduce his fiance. As they sit there getting to know one another, someone is sure to say, “Remember that time you shot your mom in the back?” as they all chuckle. Good times.
Ebdoug,
Thanks. You’re right about sarcasm/irony, IMHO. (Though I never test the theory in person. Too many crazy moms with guns out there :). My site is newsgrin.com. Parental warning: I attempt to skewer both sides of the aisle.
