Disaster – Special Irony Edition

Former FEMA Director Michael “Heckuva Job Brownie” Brown, who completely bungled the response to Hurricane Katrina, is criticizing Obama for responding to Hurricane Sandy “so quickly”. You can’t make stuff like this up.

UPDATE: Why Hurricane Sandy is the perfect end to the campaign.

It’s not clear that Brown bungled the response to Katrina–he did warn Bush and Chertoff ahead of Katrina that the New Orleans levies were likely to be breached. There is a video of Bush being warned and there are transcripts on the Internet. Bush then went on vacation and later denied having been apprised of the situation by Brown.

Have you read “The Great Deluge” by Douglas Brinkley? Required reading. Brown would not let the National Guard in. 1/2 the National Guard was in Iraq. They wouldn’t even let helicoptors drop water to these people who were stranded. They basically refused all aid while Wal-Mart was getting in food and water. While the National Guard came in by the seas. While the people were lying out on the grass because there was no room inside away from the heat. Fugate is the very best. He happens to be a Republican. He was in charge of the Andrew situation in Florida. Obama begged him to become head of disaster relief. Fugate wants only to head up disasters when they come. He did a wonderful job through this.

No more “Brownie” situations while Fugate is head.

#2 brings up an interesting point about the National Guard.

Romney’s theory is that the states should be handling disasters. But then the Federal Army comes along and grabs all the state National Guardsmen for whatever war du jour they’re fighting.

Not “The Army” but Bush to play war games. Examples where the army has taken the National guard?

Colbert’s take on the political implications of Sandy was awesome. Here’s one of the humorous clips (he also had some sincere ones, too):
