This cartoon makes the point that we don’t learn from history, but I think it might even be worse than that. At least in some cases, we have encouraged these people to become dictators. Democracy can be such a messy thing.

Wonder why Saddam isn’t on there. He was our bud as well.
I don’t understand – Mubarak seemed a faithful ally of the States for years, keeping the peace with Israel despite that state’s aggression towards other Arab states, and assisting America in the extraordinary rendition and torture of terror suspects. Mubarak helped the US, and apart from any embarrassment caused by the quick about face, the US’s support of Mubarak hasn’t come back to bite it.
Well, if you believe that we wanted Mubarak to be a dictator, then you are correct Steve. He did that well. However, our overwhelming support of a brutal dictator in Egypt has not helped our relationship with Arabs or other Muslims.
I agree IK we never seem to learn from History when it concerns our foreign policy.
