IIRC, the US-Israel relationship started when the US wanted to replace the Soviet Union as a partner to Israel. The US wanted to stop the Soviets from getting too much influence in the region. But that doesn't answer the question as to why it lasts.

I didn't answer anything, did I?

Thanks Jonah, I posted your link on Facebook, where it just so happens I'm having a "debate" where I was just called a "commie" by virtue of supporting a national health plan and having a college education ("everyone knows that most colleges are run by anti-capitalist communists") Don't drink the Kool-aid.

I'm not sure Jeff, but it's one of my biggest problems with current U.S. foreign policy. I HATE that we are constantly worshiping Israel as if they can do no wrong, and they are constantly causing instability and violence in the area, partially because they know they're unquestioningly backed by the U.S. It's ridiculous.

Mitt is almost as quotable on this trip as Bush was during his tenure. It's been sad and hilarious all at the same time.

I have an honest question that I'm hoping someone can answer for me: why is US policy with Israel so murky? We are allied with them, give them all kinds of support, and ignore their violation of treaties and territory agreements with the Palestinians. We ignore their discrimination of the people of Palestine, and anybody who questions all of this gets attacked left and right. What's the secret to this alliance?

All I have to say is that Romney took this trip to show America how he would handle diplomatic relations if he was President, and he has definitely suceeded in showing us that very thing.

We need to keep him as far away from the White House as possible.
