Slavery

And you thought slavery was a thing of the past? Do you ever wonder how all those products you buy are made so cheaply?

It amazes me that people don’t seem to realize why our products are so plentiful and so cheap compared to other places in the world. There was a great documentary made a few years ago about the shops in China that make Mardi Gras beads. The film interviewed hundreds of people on the streets of New Orleans, and all but one person had no idea that children made the beads they were throwing all over the place.

America has enjoyed the spoils of slavery for decades, and it’s the silent story behind our economic success.

so if it’s ok for China to sell us stuff can someone remind me why there is still an embargo with Cuba? Hey guess what, another cheap source of labour, and it’s right next door!

The reason it’s okay is because China is wealthy and cand provide us with cheap goods. Cuba, on the other hand, has been too demonized by the US in the past. We are actively involved in suppressing their economy, so it would look bad if we suddenly turned around and started trading with them. While Cuba and China have similar political structures, I think the reason we turn a blind eye to China while we denounce Cuba is because of money.

    money (power).
And by ‘we’, I mean human beings.
At least a very large majority of ‘us’…. enough to cause serious pain to those who have little.

It has always been so…. just not so obvious.

I’ve been to both China and Cuba, and I don’t agree that they have similar political structures at all. Cuba still is (mostly) a socialist state, whereas China is hardly socialist at all (despite their claims).

But I don’t think that is the issue anyway. I think we denounce Cuba for two reasons: because Castro made fools of us (more than once), and because of the large Cuban expat population in Florida and New Jersey who hate Castro with flaming passion.

I think we need to end the Cuban embargo, jeez the cold is over already.
The other reason we don’t offend China is they’ll cut off our credit card. That and they keep the dear leader of NK in his place for us.
