Watched a mini-debate between our incumbent Democratic State Rep and her Tea Party challenger. The host of the show brought up the Tea Partier’s plan to support a 10-year phase out of state income tax. “Yes,” he said, “I will eliminate the income tax”. Then the host pointed out that the real plan is to replace the income tax with a sales tax which he didn’t deny (and also BTW he would not say what expenses he would cut to save money). The Democratic incumbent responded, accurately, that the sales tax would be regressive.

60 to 70% of the people probably have no idea what is meant by a regressive tax. Democrats just don’t seem to get it that 50% of the potential electorate is below average intelligence. They need to explain things in terms that people can understand….she could have said – “Oh, the sales tax will shift the tax burden to people like your Grandma; Grandma and Grandpa will see a significant tax increase under your plan”. But, no, most everyone will only remember “I will eliminate the income tax”. Republicans are masters at duping those of below average intelligence. Seems to work every time and will only get worse as we continue their (non-)education policies. I fear for the long term viability of the Democrats.
